I have been listening to “talking books” since before I was born. My father read books to my Mom when she was pregnant.

My mother never let my father read ghost stories to me, but he was allowed to read me all the action and adventure stories that he could find time for. Maybe that is why, when I was plus-years-old, I loved to read all of those same adventure stories to myself.

In a bookcase in our living room were titles like Robinson Crusoe, Tom Sawyer; and Alice in Wonderland. I loved them all, and I still do. Now I can hear all of these wonderful talking stories for the young, and young at heart.

I join Alice and my life is no longer ordinary, as together we follow a rabbit down a hole. From there we are engaged in adventures that test our courage and our resourcefulness. All of the characters in Wonderland come live in the pages of talking books: the Mad Hatter, the March Hare, the Cheshire Cat, and the Queen of Hearts or classic salad recipes.

Together we celebrate our Un-Birthdays, as we sing the “Happy Un-Birthday Song” to one another. We are in another world through the looking glass, and we’re beginning to be sorry we went through. We both want to return home safely now.

But it is already too late—we are on the chessboard. Alan Bennett's narration of the Lewis Carroll classic is as memorable as the story itself.

When your children enter Wonderland with Alice, their adventures will unfold at an even faster pace today—they won’t have to stop in the middle of a chess move to turn the page. When I was a child, whoever was brave enough to do that ran a good chance of losing her head.
