Doctor Who Audiobooks – Doctor Who And The Daleks

When Doctor Who started out in the fall of 1963 as the peak Saturday night BBC science fiction show, nobody, least of all the show's producers, expected it to last far beyond that initial series.

That it has gone on to become a legendary part of television history is due not only to the skill with which the actors in the early days managed to carry over the stories given to them by the scriptwriters, but also to the ingenuity and invention displayed by those very scriptwriters themselves.

These inventive minds were given full rein to produce the most despicable, evil, and twisted characters imaginable to become Doctor Who's enemies.

None of these abominable creations achieved greater fame or status than the Daleks.
It was during the very first series, in fact only the second episode ever to be made, that the Daleks were suddenly thrust upon an unsuspecting world. Called simply “The Daleks”, this episode starts with the time travelers, Doctor Who and his companions, arriving at a planet apparently devoid of life. From the petrified forest into which they arrived, they suddenly saw a city in the distance.

The travelers are soon taken prisoner by the inhabitants of the city, who are the Daleks. The planet on which Doctor Who has arrived is completely devastated due to the effects of a nuclear war that was fought over five centuries ago.

One of the combatants in this nuclear war, the Thals, had recovered from this and were now physically restored. The Dals, their opponents, on the other hand, were in anything but a perfect state. They now lived inside metal casings as mutated creatures.

When Doctor Who and the other time travelers escape from the clutches of the Daleks, they join the Thals, who are in desperate need of food. They appeal to the Daleks, but are refused.

The travelers than realise that they cannot escape from this planet without a fluid link which has been left in the city.
The travelers only hope of escape is to persuade the Thals to fight for their food. Eventually they manage to do this, Doctor Who and his daughter engage in distraction tactics at the front  of the city, while their two traveling companions, aided by Thals, attack the rear.

The Daleks plan to counter this by causing nuclear radiation to leak into the air. When the final fight takes place in the Daleks' control room, damage is not only inflicted upon the machines, but on the Daleks themselves.

Doctor Who leaves with the Daleks seemingly dead. Of course we all know that the Daleks were not dead, and have continued to feature in the series right up to the present day. Now, you can enjoy many of these episodes not only on video and DVD, but also on freely downloadable Doctor Who Audiobooks which you can listen to anywhere.

'Nobody who crosses Pike lives to tell the tale!'

When the TARDIS lands on a remote and wild stretch of the Cornish coast, its occupants little realise that they have arrived in the 17th century. The Doctor, Ben and Polly soon discover to their cost, however, that these are far from hospitable times. The local Squire is at the head of a plot to offload contraband, whilst a long-rumoured hoard of stolen treasure has drawn attention to the village church. Inadvertently stumbling upon this web of deception and double-crossing, the time travellers are rapidly propelled into danger.

The Doctor's encounter with the ill-fated Joseph Longfoot leaves him with a cryptic clue to the location of Avery's Treasure. But a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing, as the fearsome pirate Samuel Pike (he has a metal hook in place of a hand) is only too willing to prove. To his dismay, the Doctor realises that Pike and his bloodthirsty henchmen will stop at nothing - not even the threat of Avery's Curse - to find and seize the ill-gotten hoard.

Ben and Polly, meanwhile, must choose their allies with care. In these duplicitous days no-one is ever sure who to trust, and the stakes are suddenly raised as smugglers and pirates go head to head with the local militia. Can the time travellers help to save an entire village from burning - and still escape to the TARDIS with their lives.
